2023 was a decent year for abundant housing advocates in Traverse City.

What’s next?

Here are our 2024 goals and strategies.

2024 goals

  • keep HomeStretch’s Lot O project on track
  • get the Beitner project back on track
  • upzone R2
  • create a housing fund
  • allow ADUs behind duplexes
  • allow year-round Traverse City residents who own multiple single-family homes in Traverse City to build an ADU behind their homes
  • better regulate short-term rentals in C1/C2 zones (currently 25% of units allowed) and revisit C3/C4 policies (100% allowed)

Strategies to achieve these goals

  • grow our membership
  • advocate for more housing in Traverse City, especially more workforce, attainable and affordable housing on underutilized City-owned land
  • build a relationship with the new City Manager
  • build and strengthen relationships with elected and appointed City Commission and Planning Commission officials.
  • support the appointment of pro-housing candidates to the Planning Commission.
  • support the appointment of pro-housing candidates to the DDA board
  • educate residents and elected/appointed officials on evidence-based pro-housing policies and practices.
  • build and strengthen relationships with organizations, including local businesses, that support abundant housing.
  • advocate and educate on the value of low-carbon footprint housing
  • advocate for more progressive zoning reform (the things that got left off last year)
  • support the creation of a forward-thinking housing fund
