Terrific Tuesdays: Structured Play Program to Improve Wellbeing at Central Grade School

After a successful Marvelous Mondays pilot at Traverse Heights Elementary this winter, we’re excited to expand to Central Grade School this spring.

Terrific Tuesdays provide fun, structured play at Central Grade School during lunch recess to increase physical activity, encourage positive behaviors, and improve wellbeing.

Do you have one hour a week at lunch this spring and like to:

  • Help our kids succeed?
  • Play and have fun?
  • Support a strong Central Grade School?

We need you.

WHY TERRIFIC TUESDAYS?

Alongside Central Grade’s noon duty staff (they’re in charge during recess, you’re there to play with the kids) and Behavior Support Team, Terrific Tuesdays aim to:

1. Ensure that all Central Grade Super Stars are having fun and smiling during recess

2. Build positive relationships with volunteer community members

3. Increase physical activity and movement during recess

4. Decrease behavior issues on the playground (and in class)

HOW TERRIFIC TUESDAYS WORK

Terrific Tuesdays start after spring break (the first day is April 4) and will run through the end of the school year.

With inspiration from PlayWorks, Terrific Tuesday games are a mix of:

– traditional sports (soccer, basketball, football)

– tag games (band-aid, sharks/minnows)

– playground activities (swings/slides/gaga ball)

– walking (laps on the perimeter)

– parallel play (scavenger hunts, juggling, jump rope)

Students get to choose what they play. Same with volunteers.

GET INVOLVED

Each recess is 20 minutes long – Central Grade has six recesses (one per grade).

Volunteers can sign up for:

Terrific Tuesdays Shift #1 10:45-11:55a(1st, Kindergarten, 3rd)

Terrific Tuesdays Shift #2 12:00-1:10p (2nd, 5th, 4th)

Consistency is important so ideally, all volunteers can make all/most Terrific Tuesdays this spring.

Volunteers are also required to complete a background check.

Who wants to play?

It’ll be fun. And rewarding.

Promise.
